Are Cash Gifts Taxable?

Are cash/check gifts to the pastor taxable when they come from individuals and not directly from the church?

I am not a tax adviser nor even a financial adviser. So please consult someone that knows more than I do.

However, when I was pastoring and received cash gifts from people, I asked myself a simple question to determine whether I should claim the gift. I asked, "If I wasn't a pastor, would this person have given me this money?" The answer was almost always, the gift is taxable.
